You know I used to make fun of the other kids who had pimples when I was growing up. Now as a grown man, I have what is called adult acne. They do say, “Payback is a bitch”!

We have the pimples, the blackheads and the whiteheads, don’t we? I have had or I am having them now. Sometimes I just want to put on a mask before I go out. In truth, it’s not that bad, but I still don’t like it. Don’t you feel the same way? I’m sure you do.

Adult acne is usually not given much thought when considering acne treatments. About 50% of adult women and about 25% of adult men are afflicted. Therefore fellow sufferers we have a lot of company and need a lot of acne treatments!

Acne Medication as Part of Acne Treatment- Sometimes Yes and Sometimes No

Again, many assume that acne is a problem for kids. Therefore in their shock they go to the nearest physician and demand a prescription to fix the problem. They clamor for creams or pills or a combination to the two. They can’t stand the thought of all those pimples!

If you do experience an acne outbreak and require treatments, sometimes a medical consultation is a good idea. Let’s be sure that your acne is not the result of any hormone problems.

A lot of times an over-the-counter medication will remove or relieve the problem. But, let’s first take a breath and think about our acne treatment. By now we know that over prescription of antibiotics can result in undesirable side effects.

If you take too many antibiotics they can cause yeast infections, joint problems, vision impairments and even other skin problems. Overuse of antibiotics can also compromise our immune systems and therefore make it easier for other diseases.

If you want to try a fix at home, then the best acne treatment is obtained from products that contain benzoyl peroxide. This medicine usually works. Popular products like Clearasil and Oxy have benzoyl peroxide as ingredients.

This acne treatment is available in the following forms:

1. Cleansing lotion
2. Facial mask
3. Stick
4. Cleansing bar
5. Cream
6. Gel
7. Lotion

Make sure that you have a thorough consultation with your doctor before the prescription of benzoyl peroxide as an acne treatment. The consultation should include a discussion of allergies, pregnancy and breast feeding as a minimum. Also mention any of these conditions:

1. Eczema or
2. Dermatitis, seborrheic or
3. Red, irritated skin or skin burned by the sun-- benzoyl peroxide will further aggravate these conditions.

Home Treatment for Acne

The best home treatment for acne- It is my experience that a dirty face is an invitation to Acne. Never go to sleep until you clean your face with plain old soap or a gentle cleanser. Use a cleanser that leaves your skin moisturized.

After cleansing it’s time to apply your benzoyl peroxide product. The acne treatment product should contain a minimum of 2.5% benzoyl peroxide. Initially use the treatment sparingly until you can gauge your skin’s reaction and the product’s effectiveness. Determine if the acne treatment is causing your skin to be too dry.

Finally don’t forget to moisturize your skin. Acne treatments with Benzoyl peroxide may dry out your skin. Therefore you may have the need to moisturize.
